Singular and Plural Possessive

I'm re-editing a book of mine (Wishing on Mistletoe Mountain) and came across 'Rebecca sat alone in the living room of her parents' home, replaying the night's events in her mind.'

For some reason, parents' home stuck out.  Should it be parent's home instead?  Parents is a group of people.  A crowd's home would be apostrophe s, after all.  Or should it be with an s apostrophe since parents are plural?

Off I went to the Internet.  I found it should be s apostrophe.  That's when I had a revelation.

Parents' home is the HOME OF THE PARENTS.  Parents is with an 's' at the end, so it HAS to be an s apostrophe, like parents'.

Night's event is the EVENT OF THE NIGHT.  Night isn't with an 's,' so it's apostrophe s, like night's.

Wow.  That's not even hard to remember!

Have a great week!

Those Late Night Plotting Sessions are Brutal!

The other night, I woke up around 3:30 with a dog's four paws shoved into my back. I was facing toward the side of the bed and knew my bed real estate was diminishing.  I moved my leg...another dog had curled up around my foot and up my calf.  I was just waiting for the third dog to move on top of my head.  It'd happened before.

Usually, I just shove the dogs over to my husband's side of the bed, but this time, I lay there, trying to ignore the claws that were bound to make an appearance if the dog at my back started to dream.  I couldn't sleep, so I plotted.

Why is it the best plots happen in the middle of the night, but when you fall asleep and wake up in the morning, you've forgotten all of it?

I used to have this practice of taking a 'plotting nap' during the middle of the day.  I usually didn't sleep, but I'd close my eyes and get rid of all other thoughts except for the story I was working on.  Since I have other things to do during the day, my plotting sessions are usually brought on by snoring dogs with a hugging agenda.

Anyway, this time, I remembered a lot of the plot.  So a-plotting I go!  Lucky me!

Have a great week!

Well I Learned Something New

Have you ever seen H/T or h/t on an article and made up words like here/there?  Well I finally looked it up.  H/T means 'hat tip.'  It gives a nod to someone who gave them the idea or information for the article.

Read more from Merriam Webster on H/T.

Very interesting!

Have a great week!

Friday Fun!

I love to have fun on Fridays.  That's the day we have things like pizza, subs, or French fries--in other words, foods I like to eat.

Today, I wanted to have fun but couldn't think of anything.  So I turned to the Internet and searched on 'Fun Things to Do.'

I found a bunch of things.  Up here in Green Bay, WI, it's tough to get outside in the cold and snow, so I'm thinking of inside fun things to do.

So if you want to have a fun weekend, consider any of the following:

  • play card games or board games and keep a total of wins.  The winner gets a prize.
  • go out for ice cream...even in the cold
  • try a new recipe
  • make a blanket fort and read by flashlight (fun to do, even as adults)
  • make a scrapbook
  • create a tourist booklet for your area for when people come to visit
  • rearrange the furniture in a room or clean a room--sounds daunting but it can be fun to organize everything in your house, starting with a room at a time
  • figure out what's on your bucket list
  • take a free online class for fun
  • set goals for yourself (typical for this week, huh?) for the year
  • go bowling
  • start seedlings from seeds inside, to plant outside later on
  • put together a jigsaw puzzle
  • bake cookies
  • learn how to decorate a cake
Let's see...I want to do all of these.  I guess I'll have to figure out what's best, huh?

Have a great week!

Want Something to Do?

If you've never read any of my books (or if you have), I have trailers for all of them at YouTube.  They were fun to work on and I learned a lot by doing them.  First, I had to remember the plot of all 56 of my books.  That's a feat in itself.  Then I had to pick out pictures and music to tell a teaser for the story.  I used Paintshop,, Movie Maker, and YouTube's video creator to make them.

If you're ever interested in making book trailers like this, I think you'll enjoy it.  It's not too bad, actually!

Cutting Back

I had an inspiration for a book I've been working on for a while the other night, but didn't have time to work on it, because of everything else I have to do.

So I'm cutting back on blogging and social media, just to find the time to write.  Should be fun, so stay tuned!

Have a super week and have a WONDERFUL New Year!
